Meet Rafiki!

Rafiki is a male common seal pup around who was first reported to us on 3rd July 2016, he was found at White Strand Beach in Carlingford Co Louth by Eveline Keenan. Everytime someone went to check on him he was back in the water.
Our volunteers kept an eye on him for a few hours and eventually managed to get him later that night.

He was taken to Avenue Veterinary Hospital where he was looked after overnight by John MacGuinness before being driven to the centre by Patricia Brady and Lorcan Murphy.

Rafiki was approx 9 days old when he arrived with us and he weighed only 8.05kg, He was very Emaciated.

After a few days in ICU with plenty of fluids Rafiki was a totally different seal. We moved him into a kennel so he had more space to move around and also access to a bath.

Rafiki was given a milk formula to help him put on weight before being moved onto fish soup. Both of these formulas are tube fed directly into the stomach.

Rafiki loves to play in his bath and we have started leaving him a fish while he is there. He has been nibbling on them so we will start to force feed him this week.

We will keep you updated on the progress of Rafiki so stay tuned.
